CERT 101 - Introduction to Assessment & Treatment of PTSD - (10 contact hrs)

Course Goal
Course Participants will learn about the trauma induction and reduction process; how to consider the most appropriate assessment and diagnostic instruments; how resiliency and stress reactions are determined in part by the history and current social resources; how to classify the presenting symptoms of the traumatized and determine the best intervention approach from an array of approaches. This distance learning course satisfies Part B of the Green Cross Academy of Traumatology Certified Traumatologist criteria.
Course Objectives: Students who complete this course will:
- Recognize the continuum of post-traumatic stress responses and disorders from the perspective of trauma theory.
- Recognize the major symptoms of acute and chronic post-traumatic stress disorders, including possible implications for personality development.
- Recognize and be able to discuss how symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorders may be misdiagnosed.
- Identify at least five (5) instruments used to assess disorders associated with traumatic stress and discuss the potential merits and deficits of each.
- Recognize the utility of phase-oriented treatment with trauma survivors.
- Describe methods to help clients to establish inter- and intrapersonal safety including self-soothing and symptom containment skills.
- Compare and contrast six (6) PTSD treatments methods.
- Discuss how the therapist may effectively employ the "self" as a tool for healing.

CSM 100 - Compassion Stress Management Overview (1 contact hr)

Continuing Education Credit: 1 contact hour
Time to Complete Course: 7 days
Objective: To provide an overview of compassion stress and compassion fatigue. In this course, you will learn:
- Define compassion fatigue, secondary traumatic stress, and burnout
- Differentiate between burnout and compassion fatigue
- List at least five symptoms of compassion stress/compassion fatigue
- List at least five means of reducing compassion stress

- Articulates the developmental history of compassion fatigue including
countertransference, caregiver stress, burnout, vicarious traumatization, and secondary traumatic stress.
- Differentiates between compassion fatigue, secondary traumatic stress, and vicarious traumatization.
- Articulates current theoretical models for the etiology and transmission of compassion fatigue.

CLN 103 - The Transformative Nature of Grief (4 contact hrs)
Course Developed and Delivered by: Gabriel Constans Ph.D.
Continuing Education Credit: 4 contact hours
Goal: To provide course participants with knowledge and skills that help them identify, understand and use characteristics, attributes, concepts and support systems, which the bereaved can implement and utilize in their lives for them selves and others.
Objectives:
- Investigates factors that make it more likely for someone to constructively respond to adversity and use their experience as a catalyst for positive growth, change and altruistic actions.
- Identifies reactions to complicated grief and normalizes individualized responses and coping strategies.
- Explains areas found most beneficial in the experience of altruistic mourners, including meaning and control; purpose; appreciation of human life and new priorities; personal responsibility; and the experience of something beyond our selves.
- Clarifies past and existing expectations of those supporting and helping the bereaved.
- Increases the likelihood that mourners and those who support them will use the experience of death, grief and loss in a constructive manner to create positive change.
